Turkey-Syria Powerful Earthquake 2023

On 6 February 2023, a Magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck southern and central Turkey and northern and western Syria. Followed by consecutive after-quakes over the next week, an estimated 14 million people, or 16 percent of Turkey's population were affected, killing tens of thousands of people and displacing countless in the two Middle-East countries.

In Turkey, the gravity of the devastation caused locals and the international community to criticise the Turkish authorities for its deficiencies in maintaining safety standards for building and houses construction, of which corruption, bureaucracy and a lack of law enforcement are said to have contributed to the issue.

Despite wide scale casualties and damages to properties, rescue efforts from across continents and regions flooded into the country, in an attempt to bring hope to the injured, the missing and families affected by the catastrophe.

To battle the dark times before seeing lights at the end of the tunnel. Turkish people stayed together, sharing food and tents, opening up their hearts to each other and accompanying those in need, not because they were brave, but because they realised that togetherness, patience and persistence were the only things helpful for meeting their loved ones again, alive, injured or dead.
